White House

The oldest building in the Cologne district Sylz is named after the White House. This is a medieval palace from the number of historical "water castles".

White House - Secluded Water Castle

Secluded White House Castle (Weißhaus), built in the 14th century. on an elevated stone base, surrounded by water. In the Middle Ages, a man-made pond guarded the peace of the Benedictine brothers (it served as the residence of the abbots of the brotherhood of St. Panteleimon). For Cologne, the fortified Weißhaus was the first defensive line from the Trier.

The total area of the castle is 743 m². Two arched bridges connect the islet of Weishaus with a huge park. The snow-white palace with slender balustrades, expressive turrets and wrought-iron openwork of the gate looks elegantly against the background of mirror water and wonderful greenery.

Over the years, Weishhouse has survived wars, floods, crushing fires; it was repeatedly restored. The appearance of the Gothic brick tower has remained unchanged since the reconstruction of 1613. The two-story classic mansion was rebuilt in 1843.

The neo-Gothic chapel was consecrated by the archbishop in 1857. The White House Castle Temple impresses with its high rib arches, vibrant tempera paintings and stained glass windows.

Today the castle is privately owned.
